Reviewing Movies: Elemental 2023

Hi peeps!

I’m back with my new journal! If yesterday I invited you to review a short story, today I invite you to accompany me for review a movie. The title is Elemental and released at 2023 by Disney Pixar. Let’s read today’s journal to get the review!

Set in Element City, the movie follows Ember Lumen, a fiery and passionate young woman who works in her family’s shop, and Wade Ripple, a gentle water inspector who accidentally enters her life and her heart. Their friendship and romance challenge the city’s unspoken rule, elements shouldn’t mix. Together, they learn that connection is more powerful than difference.

At its core, Elemental is about acceptance, love, and identity. It shows that differences can bring people closer rather than separate them. It also highlights themes of immigration and belonging, showing how families adapt to new environments while holding onto tradition.

This movie begins with Ember, a young fire element, who helps her immigrant parents run their family shop in Fire Town. Although she is expected to take over the business, she struggles with her fiery temper and dreams of a different life. The conflict starts when Ember accidentally meets Wade, a water element who challenges her to see the world beyond Fire Town. As their friendship grows into love, Ember faces pressure from her family and the risk of losing everything she has known. The climax occurs when she must choose between fulfilling her family’s expectations or following her own heart. In the end, Ember accepts change, reconciles with her parents, and decides to pursue her dream, symbolizing courage, love, and self-acceptance.

In Elemental, Ember undergoes a powerful journey of self-discovery and emotional growth. At first, she is passionate but short-tempered, bound by duty to her family and their store. Her world is small and strictly divided by elemental differences, which makes her believe that fire and water can never mix. However, as she gets to know Wade, she learns patience, empathy, and the courage to express her true feelings. Wade’s open and emotional nature helps Ember soften her anger and realize that love and understanding can bridge even the biggest differences. By the end of the film, Ember becomes more confident, open-hearted, and brave enough to pursue her own dreams while still honoring her roots.

The film shines with colorful, fluid animation. Fire and water interactions are awesome, glowing embers, translucent ripples, and vapor effects make the world feel alive. Each “element” district reflects cultural differences, similar to real-world immigrant neighborhoods.

Composed by Thomas Newman, the soundtrack beautifully supports each scene. Light, playful tunes during romantic moments and emotional crescendos during tense or heartfelt scenes. Silence is also used effectively during Ember’s emotional realizations.

The dialogue blends humor and warmth. Puns like “elements don’t mix” double as metaphors for real social divides. Conversations between Ember and her parents feel natural, mixing generational love and misunderstanding.

Anyone who has ever felt different or caught between two worlds (family expectations with personal dreams) will connect deeply. The story also resonates with immigrants, young adults, and romantic dreamers.

For me, Elemental reminds us that love and understanding can bridge even the widest gaps between cultures and generations. It encourages us to embrace what makes us unique instead of hiding it. In the end, Elemental is more than a love story, it’s a mirror of our world. Colorful, diverse, and full of invisible walls waiting to be melted. What “element” do you think represents your personality? Fiery, fluid, grounded, or breezy?

Thank you for accompany me for review a movie, see you on the next journal peeps!
